About Neck & Shoulder Pain
What you should know
Neck and shoulder pain is one of the most common conditions seen in manual therapy — and one of the most frequently undertreated at the structural level. The muscles and joints of the cervical spine and shoulder girdle do not exist in isolation; they respond to the tension patterns running through the entire fascial system. Forward head posture, rounded shoulders, and restricted thoracic mobility all place excessive, chronic load on the neck and upper shoulder structures. Rolfing Structural Integration addresses these whole-body postural patterns that are generating the load — not just the local muscles that are symptomatic as a result.
Our approach
How Rolfing Addresses Neck and Shoulder Pain

Victor Aguilar, certified Rolfer at the Dr. Ida Rolf Institute, begins with a postural and movement assessment to identify the structural patterns placing chronic stress on the neck and shoulder region. Common contributors include restricted fascia in the anterior chest and pectoral region, loss of thoracic extension, shortened suboccipital tissue, and fascial tension running from the hips through the thoracolumbar fascia into the cervical spine. Rolfing techniques systematically release these structures — restoring length in shortened fascial chains, decompressing the joints of the cervical spine and shoulder girdle, and improving the coordination between the neck, thorax, and arms. Patients often report a noticeable reduction in the effort required to hold their head upright after even the first few sessions.
Rolfing may be appropriate for your neck and shoulder pain if conservative treatment — chiropractic, massage, or physical therapy — has provided only temporary relief, if your posture has gradually worsened and you believe it is contributing to your symptoms, if you experience frequent tension headaches originating in the neck and upper shoulder region, or if you have been told your neck pain is postural in origin and want a structural approach to correcting it. Single sessions are $180. Three-session packages at $495. Ten-session series at $1,500.
