About Herniated Disc

What you should know

A herniated disc occurs when the soft inner material of a spinal disc pushes through its outer casing and irritates a nearby nerve root. The pain can be intense and disabling — and many patients are told surgery is their only real option. In most cases, that's not true. Conservative chiropractic care, especially when combined with spinal decompression therapy, has a strong clinical record of helping patients recover from disc herniations without surgical intervention.

Our approach

How Chiropractic and Decompression Address Herniated Discs

We begin with a full assessment, including review of any imaging, to understand the exact level and nature of the disc injury. Depending on the case, treatment may include spinal decompression therapy to create negative intradiscal pressure and encourage disc retraction, gentle adjustments to restore alignment and reduce nerve compression, targeted soft tissue and muscle work around the affected segment, and therapeutic modalities for nerve inflammation and pain. Many patients with even significant disc herniations achieve substantial improvement with this approach. We'll be honest with you about what to expect based on your specific presentation — and if surgical consultation is warranted, we'll tell you that too.

Chiropractic care for herniated discs may be appropriate if you have lumbar or cervical disc herniation confirmed by MRI or clinical exam, nerve-related symptoms such as radiating pain, numbness, or weakness, disc-related pain that has not responded adequately to medication or physical therapy, or if you are trying to avoid or delay surgery. New patients receive a full evaluation. We accept most major insurance plans.
