About Back Pain
What you should know
Chronic back pain is one of the most common reasons patients seek acupuncture — and one of the conditions with the strongest clinical evidence supporting its use. Acupuncture works through several mechanisms: it stimulates the release of endorphins and other natural pain-modulating chemicals, reduces local inflammation in affected tissue, restores normal nerve signaling in chronically sensitized pain pathways, and improves blood flow to injured or degenerated structures. The result is not just short-term relief — it's a shift in the underlying physiology that sustains improvement between sessions.
Our approach
How Acupuncture Treats Back Pain

Your acupuncturist will take a full history and assess both the physical and constitutional factors contributing to your back pain. Treatment involves the precise placement of fine needles at specific points along the lower back, sacrum, and related meridians — as well as distal points that influence the spinal region through the nervous system. Depending on your presentation, adjunct techniques like cupping, electrical stimulation (electroacupuncture), or gua sha may be added to address deeper muscle tension and improve tissue circulation. Most patients feel a meaningful reduction in pain and improved mobility within 3–5 sessions. A structured course of care typically involves 8–12 sessions, with frequency tapering as results accumulate.
Acupuncture may be appropriate for you if you have chronic or recurring low back, mid-back, or upper back pain, back pain from muscle tension, disc degeneration, facet joint dysfunction, or spinal stenosis, pain that hasn't fully resolved with chiropractic, physical therapy, or medication, or back pain related to stress, poor sleep, or systemic inflammation. We accept most major insurance plans and offer self-pay rates. New patients receive a full intake and evaluation.
