About Allergies & Sinus Issues

What you should know

Allergies and chronic sinus issues are fundamentally immune system responses — the body reacts to a trigger (pollen, dust, pet dander, or unresolved inflammation) by releasing histamine and inflammatory mediators that cause the symptoms you feel. Medication suppresses the response but doesn't change why the immune system is reacting in the first place. Acupuncture works upstream: it reduces the histamine response, calms the chronic low-grade inflammation that keeps allergy-prone patients reactive, improves sinus drainage, and regulates the immune modulation that determines how your body responds to environmental triggers. Research has shown that regular acupuncture reduces both the intensity of allergic symptoms and the need for medication in patients with seasonal allergic rhinitis.

Our approach

How Acupuncture Addresses Allergies & Sinus Issues

Treatment is tailored to whether the primary issue is seasonal allergies, chronic sinusitis, or post-infection sinus inflammation. Points are selected to open the sinus channels and drain congestion, reduce the histamine and inflammatory response that drives allergy symptoms, strengthen what Chinese medicine calls the wei qi — the outer defensive immune function — and support the lung and spleen channels that govern respiratory and mucosal health. For acute episodes, symptom relief is often noticeable within a single session. For long-term reduction in allergic sensitivity, a course of treatment several weeks before allergy season begins is most effective. Many patients find they can reduce or eliminate their reliance on antihistamines after a full course of care.
